What is the Marsden Cross Trust Board?

The Marsden Cross Trust Board was established in 2003. The purposes and Objects of the Trust as set out in the Deed of Charitable Trust are:

• To seek to acquire the land on which stands the Marsden Cross at Oihi, Bay of Islands, and land adjacent thereto for the purposes of a place of perpetual commemoration, enjoyment, education and recreation available for all people irrespective of religious belief or persuasion or of none, and for associated religious, educational and charitable purposes, and to maintain and care for the same including the flora, fauna and archaeology associated therewith.

• To establish, maintain, and operate centres of Teaching and Worship of an Ecumenical nature, and for spiritual renewal, education and teaching.

• To establish, create, and maintain and operate a memorial to the partnership between Maori and Pakeha, especially in the Bay of Islands and Northland area, in the planting and spreading of the Gospel in Aotearoa New Zealand.

• To provide and/or operate a place or places as a Centre where the national heritage and history of the coming of the Gospel to Aotearoa/New Zealand may be taught, commemorated and preserved for the benefit of New Zealand and its communities.

• To associate and work with the Government of New Zealand, the Historic Places Trust, local and regional authorities and other interested parties and bodies for the achievement of all and/or any of the purposes and objectives of the Trust and for the benefit of New Zealand and its communities.

• To encourage and provide for the development and provision of resources, facilities and materials relating to education, training and commemoration of the history and national heritage of both Maori and Pakeha in Aotearoa/New Zealand, including scholarships, exhibitions, prizes, awards and other forms of aid or assistance.

• Such other religious, educational and recreational activities as are compatible with the above objectives and purposes and which are charitable.
